1. Pr-contemplation
If you're in this stage, then you're more or less happy with your relationship. You don't really want to change anything, and are okay with the way things are going.
2. Contemplation
This is when you start wondering if there's something you could change about your relationship. Maybe spend more time together? Maybe less? You are evaluating the relationship from a distance, and noticing things that might not be working for you. You also start looking at ways in which the relationship might be unhealthy for you, doing you more harm than good.
3. Preparation
In the contemplation stage, you figure out that perhaps this relationship is hurting you, and you decide that it's time to throw in the towel. You enter the third stage when you start preparing to end things. Maybe you seek help, give yourself a deadline, or try to come up with the best way possible to put call it quits.
4. Action
Whether it is with one big blowout, or a slow fade, or something in between, this is when you start implementing your decision to end the relationship. You either tell your partner straight up, or start spending less time with them. Maybe you start meeting other people. This stage is about slowly stepping into a life without your boyfriend, or girlfriend.
5. Maintenance
This is when you crystallize your life without your plus one. Maybe you start investing in building a new social circle, or maybe you avoid going to places where you are likely to run into your ex. You go through a social, physical, and emotional detox or shift.
Contrary to what it may seem like, breaking up is a gradual process. Which stage are you at?
